Confirmed: Government to invest £300 million in Mainline overhaul

The Government has confirmed that it will go ahead with a £300 million overhaul of tracks used by Southern Rail.

I have been calling for this major investment for months and I am delighted that the Government has confirmed this measure will go ahead.

Around half of the delays caused to Southern Rail are a result of track and signal problems. This investment will leave Southern with no excuse for future delays.

The £300 million will mean:

  • brand new track and signalling equipment
  • improved security to prevent trespassers on the track
  • better drainage to prevent water damage
  • vital improvements to embankments and plant overgrowth

This is a long term overhaul with a policy of pro-active maintenance to minimise disruption to passengers.

I am continuing to campaign for the Government to do more in its changes to the Southern Rail service – including stripping GTR of the franchise – however this £300 million investment is an important win for commuters.
