Three key priorities for local residents

Date Filed:  Thursday, May 18, 2017

Purley Skyscraper

The Government has “Called In” the Purley Skyscraper planning application.  This was due to a campaign that I led and which was supported by 9,000 local people and seven Residents Associations.

This means that an independent Planning Inspector will now decide whether the 17-floor skyscraper can go ahead. The council had granted planning permission in December, against the overwhelming wishes of local people.

We will now get to present our case to the Planning Inspector after the council ignored local opinion.

Southern Rail

I have secured £300 million for track infrastructure improvements by directly meeting the Prime Minister, and got a compensation scheme for 2016 season ticket holders introduced.

Three further steps need to be taken:

1. Remove the franchise from Southern/GTR who are inept, break the franchise up (it is too big) and re-let it to more competent operators

2. Introduce legislation to make strike action on the trains harder – for example by having a Judge adjudicate on whether particular strike action is reasonable.

3. A further £1 billion of investment to increase the total capacity of the line by 30%. The line around East Croydon features major pinch points . The line in that area needs widening and East Croydon needs to be expanded from 6 to 8 platforms.

At Croydon University Hospital (Mayday) I lobbied Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt for the £25 million needed to build a new A&E department - he agreed, and work is now well underway on site.

At Purley Hospital, local residents and I have been calling for the opening hours at the Minor Injury Unit /GP Hub to be extended. The campaign was successful, and on 1st April the morning opening hours were restored.

The Unit is now open 8am to 8pm 365 days a year.
