Chris Philp - Continuing to oppose the Purley Skyscraper
23/12/2016 09:11:00

Chris has escalated his campaign to stop the 17 storey Purley skyscraper by lobbying the Mayor of London to block the proposal.

In a letter to the Mayor, Chris highlighted that 9,000 local residents had signed his petition to block the proposal on the basis that it is “completely out of keeping with the character of the local area”.

The plan was also opposed by 7 residents associations, representing more than 80,000 residents.

At a meeting on 15 December, the Council Planning Committee the proposal was approved 6-4, with 6 Labour Councillors voting in favour and 4 Conservative Councillors voting against.

Prior to this meeting Chris lead a group of 100 local residents in protest to the proposal, calling on the Council to block the plans.

Chris’ letter has called for the London Mayor to veto this decision and to inappropriate and potentially damaging to the local area.

Chris said: “I have contacted Sadiq Khan asking him to undo the damage that Labour Councillors are trying to do Purley and the surrounding area.

“This proposed skyscraper will put a major strain on local infrastructure, especially parking, with absolutely no evidence to suggest that it will have any lasting benefit for the local economy. Combine this with the fact that its design and height are completely out of keeping with the character of the local – it will dominate the sky line for miles around – and it should be clear to anyone why residents are so outraged by the proposal.”
